In the morning on March 7, the Symposium of UN Agencies in China on the 16th CISMEF was held in the UN Building in Beijing. The symposium was attended by 30-plus representatives from the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office (RCO), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the UN WOMEN, the UN Centre for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization (CSAM), the UNESCO, the UNDP, and other UN agencies in China, and the SME Bureau of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), and the China Center for Promotion of SME Development of MIIT.
The symposium was presided over by Ma Jian, Deputy Representative in China of the UNIDO. Ms. Bergman Elis, Head of RCO, delivered a speech. Ms. Bergman Elis noted that, the convention and exhibition industry has boosted employment, investment, and MICE-related industries; since this symposium features themes closely related to the functions of the UN, it is expected that attendees can exchange views on how to use the CISMEF to push for further cooperation and communication among SMEs across the world.

Afterwards, He Zuoxian, Director of the Bureau of CISMEF, delivered a speech. He expressed heartfelt thanks to the UNIDO and the RCO for initiating the symposium. He noted that SMEs have always been a hot topic among countries, and the hosting of the CISMEF will offer a communication and development platform for SMEs, featuring the benefits of policy guidance, win-win, and multilateral development. He said that the symposium is designed to hear the opinions and suggestions of relevant agencies, and explore the prospect of common development of SMEs. It is also expected that the UN agencies in China can offer support and assistance to further publicize the CISMEF. In echoing with the theme of the “Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Day”, activities will be arranged for these agencies during the proceedings of the CISMEF.

At the meeting, Fan Yinghui, Director of the China Center for Promotion of SME Development of MIIT, introduced the cooperation projects related to the Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). She and the UN agencies in China made in-depth exchanges on the project of countries fully leveraging the role of SMEs in the sustainable development of developing countries. She said that relevant activities of the project will be launched during the 16th CISMEF in this June, when the event will be used as a platform to further explore the efforts of facilitating SMEs of all countries in delivering sustainable development goals.
Ma Jian, Deputy Representative in China of the UNIDO, noted that in co-hosting the CISMEF, sustained efforts will be made to promote and speed up the sustainable industry development of developing countries and economies in transition, and enable SMEs in pursuing quality development and in integrating into global industrial chain. Meanwhile, he hoped that during the CISMEF, he can have the opportunity to visit outstanding SMEs in Guangzhou, and learn practices in energy saving.

Dr. Zhang Xubiao, a representative of the ILO, said that the ILO hosts a policy seminar each year in different countries to discuss the business environment for SMEs in all countries. He said that while allowing for the schedule of the CISMEF, the possibility of a parallel session of the ILO can be considered.

After hearing the introduction to the CISMEF, Ms. Lin Jialei, a representative of the UN WOMEN, noted that the CISMEF can be used as a platform to launch communication activities, and lead female entrepreneurs in engaging with international projects. She said that the event can play an active role in business discussion, project cooperation, resource sharing, and other aspects, and display the glamor of female entrepreneurs in multiple ways.

Ms. Wang Han, a representative of the UNESCO for the CISMEF, said that the major functions of the UNESCO include: natural science, education activities, humanities and social sciences, and cultural innovation industry. She noted that based on the classification, deep cooperation can be pursued in cultural innovation and gift.

Ms. Xu Jiayi, a representative of the UNDP, said that the main functions of the UNDP are: promoting the overseas sustainable development of Chinese SMEs through series of projects and measures, and then submitting reports on implementation progress to output knowledge and experience to other developing countries. Some previous sessions of the CISMEF were co-hosted by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC), South Africa, and other countries and agencies, and have made a difference in intensifying South-South Cooperation. It is expected that such best practices and success stories of Chinese SMEs can be compiled into books for SMEs in other parts of the world.

Mr. Anshuman Varma, a representative of the CSAM, said that after hearing the introduction to the CISMEF, he was glad to know that mechanical equipment is among the four leading industries. On one hand, he wanted to obtain the information about the participation of SMEs in mechanical equipment; on the other hand, he hoped to learn what financial subsidy and support will be offered by the CISMEF to African countries in participating the exhibition.
