INTRODUCTION OF China International Small and Medium Enterprises Fair

Approved by the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, China International Small and Medium Enterprises Fair(short for CISMEF) was launched in 2004, initiated by Zhang Dejiang, member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee & NPC Standing Committee Chairman and then Guangdong Provincial CPC Committee Secretary. Hosted by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, the People’s Government of Guangdong Province and other departments in China, it is held every autumn in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, China, and now CISMEF has been successfully held for 13 sessions. It is an UFI approved event.
With government support and market operation, CISMEF is a non-profit exhibition that aims to build a platform of “display, trade, exchange and cooperation” for SMEs home and abroad so as to increase understanding, strengthen cooperation, expand exchanges and strike common development for China’s SMEs and their foreign counterparts, which enhance the healthy development of SMEs in China. With the highest level, largest scale and most wide-ranging influence in the Asia-Pacific region, CISMEF has enjoyed the support of many countries. Since 2005, the fair has been co-hosted with some countries and international organization, including France, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Australia, Thailand, Ecuador, Vietnam, Indonesia, UN Office for South-South Cooperation, Mexico, Malaysia, Cote d’Ivoire and India. Furthermore, the Participation Mechanism of ASEM Members and Central & Eastern European Countries involve more SMEs from wider range of industries and countries into the platform of CISMEF. As a result, CISMEF provides valuable opportunities for SMEs to learn from one another and strengthen exchange and cooperation.
Since CISMEF was held for the first time, in each session there was an exhibition area of more than 100,000 square meters, among which, no less than 1000 booths with an area of more than 20,000 square meters was for enterprises outside China mainland. Every year there was about 200,000 visits for this fair. Besides the function of display and trade as an ordinary fair dose, CISMEF is also an effective cooperation platform for governments both in China and foreign countries to enhance the development of SMEs. During the fair, Chinese government releases the new policies and measures regarding the promotion of SME development; the organizing institutions of both China and co-hosting countries jointly hold SME Forum and other concerned activities so as to exchange the experience of supporting SMEs development; governments from different nations display various platforms (systems) specifically set up for SMEs such as training programs and financing services, etc.; co-hosts invite foreign embassies in China and foreign consulates general in Guangzhou to attend the International SME Development Seminar to discuss on the hot issues and difficulties related to SME development.
China’s economy has been on a steady and rapid development track with enormous market and consumption potential. Therefore, many foreign SMEs are keen to invest in and trade with China and CISMEF provides them with this opportunity. Premier Wen Jiabao spoke highly of CISMEF’s role in promoting cooperation and exchanges among SMEs and required to sum up experiences and continued to explore, in hopes of building CISMEF into an extravaganza for SMEs over the world and better promoting the cooperation and development of SMEs both in China and around the world.
